I've always got to think about the marketability of my art. "Do people really want paintings and drawings of strangers on their wall?"
More importantly...
"Do people really want paintings and drawings of naked strangers on their wall?"
I'm sure there's an audience out there. I just need to find them. Thank God I do not depend on my art as a way of living.
As a general rule I treat my art like a child. I nourish it daily and make sure I have enough money to support it; hence why I have a job. My art will never go hungry, nor will I.
Plenty of people have art, but I treat mine like it is the most important art in the world.
We get jobs to support our children; why can't we get jobs to support our art?
There must be some sort of high that artists get when they say they make a living off their art and nothing else. But to me, that's just an ego thing. And egos are very dangerous when it comes to art. Even if I started making a fantastic amount of money off my art, I would still keep another unrelated art job.
A group called "Art316" has been started by a local artist named Robin Danks, aka "Danksy", and I've been attending weekly Thursday meetings ever since I heard about it. It's nice to have a small art group that isn't focused on academia. I plan on attending for the foreseeable future.
I worked on a logo for the Art316 team during my lunch last Thursday, but I'm unsure if they're using it or not. They're still in the very early in the stages of establishing a direction, I believe.
The graphite sketch this week was done in about 15 minutes; after I finished the logo for the group. I must keep my artistic foundation solid. The loose and emotional gel pen strokes made me turn back to rigidity and the laws of nature. Two ends of the spectrum.
I bought some more artbooks last week. I added John Singer Sargent, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edward Degas and Walter Sickert books to my library. I also bought "The Watchmen", which is a graphic novel I've heard a lot about, but have never read.
