New year, same subjects.
I received some valuable feedback straight from Mr. George Pratt in my last illustration/storytelling class that told me my work seems "flat".
So my task going forward is to work on making things seem more shapely, with depth and GIRTH. As I mulled over his feedback, I thought about my drawing process and realized that I tend to think only in outlines when I'm drawing. I need to think about the planes of the body instead.
Rarely do we ever just see one or two planes of a person's body. On average due to perspective, we see three planes of everyone's body: two sides and either the top or the bottom. This also applies to the limbs and fingers. Even if I'm drawing a single body "floating", without a background or other props, I still need to apply a sense of depth and shape to everything. The foot on the ground needs to have three planes: two sides and a top. So do the hips, torso, head, fingers, etc.
I'm going to refer back to my Bridgman's Drawing from Life book to help with this, and as I'm drawing i need think about the sides of the body as I make my lines over them. I love Bridgman because his core belief is that flat lines can be used to show the plane changes and side of a figure.
So that's what I'm working on for my upcoming sketches.
I finished a new 24" x 30" painting titled "Pink Nude"; it'll go up on my website for sale soonish.
