I focused on a graphite piece last weekend and a pretty decent micron pen drawing during a work night this week. The graphite piece is good from a technical standpoint, I'm getting better at making sure the bodies I draw have harmony, from the head to the hands to the feet.
I channeled my inner Frazetta for the micron pen piece. I wanted some strong, confident, yet feminine nudity.
Jeffrey Catherine Jone's "Idyll" comic has been inspiring me recently; it's just a comic about a naked woman wondering around and philosophizing, speaking to the reader, herself, and/or animals. The comic panels reflect what I want in my artwork; a lone figure with a few simple surroundings that don't distract from the main focus of the woman.
I got the umber wash done on my fifth oil painting. It's still untitled. The idea came to me from a recent life drawing session with Teresa. I don't like to have predetermined poses when a model comes over, I just want to see how she moves and draw inspiration from that. Sure enough after about an hour or so of drawing Teresa, the pose came to me and I had her model it. I did a quick graphite sketch of it and sure enough I loved how it turned out enough to put it down on a canvas.
I take the opportunity to use the umber wash stage as an "out of control" moment. I want accuracy, but not so much that I lose the life and gesture. The wash is fluid and workable enough that I can manipulate it instantly and get the effect I want. If I don't like something I just add more solvent to lighten the paint, and if I'm ever at a point where I hate everything I've done, I can just wipe it off with a paper towel. I don't have to sit there and wait for it to dry.
But the real challenge comes when trying to maintain that wonderful harmony as I add more brush strokes and color. I think I succeeded on my last painting, "The Sermon", so I'm going to follow the same process and hopefully it turns out well.
