Continuing on with the tradition of Sunday life drawing, I had an amazing model that I met this past weekend named Raven. When I first saw her, I noticed she had a sort of quiet "power" about her; something that only became more defined the longer I tried to draw her.
It's always a challenge trying to draw someone new for the first time. The structure of the face, the body, all the proportions and perspective are just surface level things that are important, but don't mean much to me in the long run. It’s about translating who that person is; everything they have beneath their physical appearance.
Even though I felt the awkward, first time posing energy, it seemed like Raven was the opposite by radiating life, confidence and expression in all her movements. I felt like I needed to pay close attention and *listen* more than I needed to render a drawing.
I came away from this session feeling like I had only scratched the surface, and that's a wonderful feeling. These sessions aren't about mastering a model in a single sitting. I want them to be about developing a visual relationship while honing my mastery over nature's rules.
I’m eager to draw Raven again, hoping that I can capture her intangible qualities on a canvas and piece of paper.
